Long before anyone owned a vase, flowers went in a jug. There's a reason the habit stuck. The wide mouth lets stems settle where they want to sit, so a gathered bunch looks relaxed rather than arranged, and the weight of a good ceramic jug means it won't tip when the flowers open out.
